The town is the capital of the Second Bulgarian State and the Principality of Bulgaria between 1878 and 1879.
Thanks to its rich cultural and historical heritage Veliko Turnovo is an important tourist center. Situated between the Danube Plain and the Balkan Mountains, on the first hills of the Fore Balkan.
Here are the Cathedral of the Nativity, the Tsarevets and Trapezitsa fortresses, numerous museums and cultural landmarks; a total of 1613 sites of the historical heritage of Bulgaria.
The climate is moderate continental – hot summer (average July temperature 21.8 ° C and absolute maximum 41.1 ° C) and cold winter (average January temperature -0.6 ° C and absolute minimum -28.1 ° C). The average annual temperature is 11.5 ° C.
